29th August: International Day against Nuclear Tests

In 2009, 29 August was declared the International Day against Nuclear Tests by the United Nations General Assembly, calling for efforts to be made in ending nuclear tests in order to prevent disastrous and harmful effects on the lives and health of people as well as the environment.

The important of peace and security has grown in significance in the recent years. As the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu stressed in her speech in Nagasaki,

“Due to constant advances in military capabilities and in the nature of armed conflict, inaction on nuclear disarmament cannot be equated with maintaining the status quo. Inaction on disarmament will lead to a world that is more insecure and less stable.”
