Canadian Slavonic Papers is pleased to announce the winner of The Canadian Association of Slavists' Taylor & Francis Book Prize for 2017, for books published in the previous calendar year by a Canadian author (citizen or permanent resident).

The jury, consisting of three members chosen by the Canadian Slavonic Papers executive, have decided the award of $250 CAD will go to Dr. Max Bergholz for his book Violence as a Generative Force: Identity, Nationalism, and Memory in a Balkan Community, published by Cornell University Press, 2016. Dr. Bergholz will also receive recognition at the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists.

The jury described Dr. Bergholz’s work as “…an extremely powerful book, excellent in every way: exhaustively (and courageously) researched; meticulously documented; well written and theoretically well informed.”, and believes the book “…will chart new paths for future researchers of ethnicity and conflict.”
