The sustainable management of wastes is an important topic gaining significant attention in the scientific literature. The generation of wastes is expected to continue to increase, prompting the need for the development of management strategies that minimize environmental impact, reduce virgin resource extraction and use, and/or promote waste valorization. This Virtual Issue includes several recently published papers that focus on various aspects of the sustainable management of different waste streams.
The 12 peer-reviewed papers contained in this Virtual Issue address a broad range of topics related to sustainable waste management, including strategies associated with waste reduction, recycling, reuse, and valorization; advances in waste management technologies aimed at improving their sustainability; and reduction of emissions from waste management processes. In addition, these papers highlight the diverse nature of wastes being studied, which include municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, agricultural waste, and hospital waste. This body of work highlights the evolving nature of the waste management field.
