Trans youth face a whole host of barriers to educational equality. Schools are too often places of persistent bullying, discrimination and harassment. But trans youth also grow up in school, make and lose friends, fall in and out of love, experiment with and claim their different identities, and negotiate and challenge social norms.
In this special issue of the journal Sex Education, guest edited by Jen Gilbert and Julia Sinclair-Palm and entitled “Trans youth in education”, leading scholars explore how educational policies, the curriculum, and practices of teaching and learning affect the growing number of young people who identify as trans, gender non-binary or non-conforming.
Articles address policies and programmes that protect the rights of trans students; the intersection of trans identities with race, class, religion, disability, sexuality and other social identities; the proliferation of trans identities in and beyond schools; and the role of family in supporting trans students’ education and lifetime success.
