Call for applications to serve on the British Journal of Sociology of Education Editorial Board British Journal of Sociology of Education

British Journal of Sociology of Education

The British Journal of Sociology of Education is a well-known and highly regarded international journal which both reflects and helps to define an important field of activity.  Following some recent retirements, the Executive Editors of the Journal wish to appoint up to 10 new members to the Editorial Board. We are especially keen to further strengthen Board capacity in the areas of advanced quantitative methods and familiarity with educational institutions and systems in China and the United States, so applications from experienced sociologists of education with these dimensions to their profile are especially welcome. Editorial Board members carry out almost all the reviewing of submissions to the journal, and can expect to receive an average of four new papers per year (plus, on occasions, revised papers for reconsideration). There is no payment for this role.  Board members receive a hard copy of each issue of the journal and their names and affiliations are listed in the inside cover and on the website. Continued membership of the Board is a matter for mutual agreement between the individual and the Executive Editors, who review the Board membership annually.

The Executive Editors have agreed the following criteria will be used when they choose who to invite to join the wider Editorial Board. Successful applicants will:

  • Be sociologists of education;
  • Have published in BJSE or in a journal with similar or overlapping concerns;
  • Have three or more years post-doctoral experience, or if less than this, three or more published articles in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Have some prior experience of reviewing academic research articles.

Submission Instructions

Applicants should consult the journal’s webpages to familiarise themselves with the aims and scope of the Journal.  Applications should take the form of a one-page letter outlining main areas of substantive and methodological expertise and addressing the criteria listed above.  Please also include a brief cv (maximum 2 pages).

Applications should be sent by email to Helen Oliver by noon on Friday 26th October 2018.
