International Journal of Production Research Contribute to our special issue on Performance Measurement and Management in a VUCA networked World

International Journal of Production Research

The environment in which we operate and the nature of work is continuing to change. The world is becoming more networked and faster moving forcing us to plan, review and respond faster than ever before. This has been called a VUCA world (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous). In this context the role of performance measurement and management has to evolve. Increasingly we are finding that traditional management approaches are not fast enough for the speed and volume of change happening in the environment. Production and operational environments are particularly badly hit by this as they take time to adapt whilst everything else is moving very quickly in this connected digital age.

Further, our people can be disenfranchised and left behind when they are the people who are in a position to make a difference. Different organisations in different countries have different cultures and are taking different approaches to dealing with this phenomenon. However, our knowledge is limited as most research into operational and production practices is done in the west. We need to think again about our approaches to performance measurement and management, to see where what we currently do can be modified to fit the new landscape and to see what other new and radical approaches we can identify and adopt to make organisations, and in particular their production and operations functions, run better

What can I contribute?

We are looking for papers that make contributions to academic knowledge and our knowledge of practice in the following areas:

  • Emerging production and operational performance measurement and management practices for a VUCA world
  • The interaction between strategy and performance measurement especially in fast moving production and operational  environments
  • Performance measurement and its role in operational feedback and learning
  • Performance measurement in coordination and networking in particular between production and operational settings and the wider supply chain
  • Performance measurement and governance in production and operations
  • Management and organisational controls
  • The theory and practice of performance planning for production and operations
  • The theory and practice of performance reviews in production and operation environments
  • Performance measurement and management for support functions and knowledge workers
  • The theory and practice of performance measurement and management in innovation and new product development
  • Sustainability and performance measurement and management design in production and operational settings
  • The interplay between organisational design, production and operations and performance measurement and management
  • The theory and practice of performance measurement in continuous improvement
  • Performance measurement and management in production and operations as a social system
  • Performance measurement, people engagement and culture in production and operational settings
  • The impact of measurement and management practices on production and operational  performance including unintended consequences
  • Design of effective production and operational performance measurement and/or management systems
  • Effective implementation of production and operational performance measurement and/or management systems
  • Performance measurement and management as a system in a system of systems
  • Production and operational performance measurement and management frameworks, models and standards
